Goose Creek downs The Four Seasons in OT, 10-9

By Alex Webbe

Cote Zegers had a banner day for Goose Creek (Maureen Brennan, Nick Johnson, Tano Vial and cote Zegers) as they scored a hard-fought 10-9 overtime win over The Four Seasons (Kaisser Maakar, Mason Wroe, Carlitos Gracida and Luis Escobar) with Zegers scoring all ten goals for the Goose Creek lineup.

Cote Zegers scored the first two goals of the game with the opening goal coming on a 60-yard penalty shot followed by a goal from the field for a 2-0 start. Luis Escobar got The Four Seasons on the scoreboard with a goal from the field, but they trailed Goose Creek, 2-1.

Second chukker action was muted by stellar defensive plays by both sides. Zegers converted a 40-yard penalty shot for Goose Creek, 3-1, but Stevie Orthwein (substituting for Chris Nevins) responded with a goal for The Four Seasons to end the chukker with one goal separating the two teams, 3-2.

Goose Creek extended their lead to two goals in the third. Zegers scored twice from the field and added another 40-yard penalty goal as Goose Creek moved in front, 6-4. The Four Seasons picked up a pair of goals from Mason Wroe, but couldn’t keep pace with the Goose Creek foursome before the end of the first half.

Zegers scored his seventh goal of the game to open the second half, 7-4. Escobar answered back with a goal from the field, but The Four Seasons failed to make up any ground and continued to trail by two goals, 7-5.

The two teams exchanged goals again in the fifth. Two penalty conversions from Zegers were countered by a pair of goals from Wroe. Goose Creek maintained their lead, 9-7.

A sixth chukker rally by The Four Seasons netted them two goals (Wroe and Escobar) while lights out defense kept Goose Creek from scoring in the sixth chukker. At the end of regulation time it was all even at 9-9, forcing sudden-death overtime.

Goose Creek went on the offensive immediately. A Four Seasons foul near their own goal send Zegers to the penalty line where he converted the shot for his tenth goal of the match in a 10-9 Goose Creek victory.

Zegers scored an impressive ten goals in the Goose Creek win (seven on penalty shots). Wroe led the Four Seasons attack with five goals. Escobar scored three times and Orthwein was credited with a goal in the loss.

Freebooters Classic play will continue with a Friday match between Santa Clara (2-1) and goose Creek (2-1).
