Talandracas over HB Polo, 11-9
By Alex Webbe
It was the first appearance of Edouard Carmignac’s Talandracas polo team in
Queen’s Cup competition this year, as they mounted an effort to replicate their 2011
championship, and the debut of HB Polo’s Pite Merlos, the third Merlos brother in
competition. At the end of the day, all sixteen teams in the tournament had completed
their first round of play and Talandracas (Edouard Carmignac, Juan Jauretche, Lucas
James and Juan Martin Nero) registered an 11-9 win over HB Polo (Ludovic Pailloncy,
Ignacio Toccalino, Pite Merlos and Sebastian Pailloncy) Saturday afternoon.
HB Polo received one goal by handicap and added a single goal for a 2-0 first chukker
lead. Talandracas struggled in the opening minutes of play in an effort to establish a
rhythm to their play.
HB Polo scored a single goal in the second period while Talandracas came up with a
pair. HB Polo continued to hold the lead, 3-2.
The Talandracas defense stiffened in the third, producing shutout play. Two
Talandracas goals lifted them to their first lead of the day, 4-3.
HB Polo’s offense exploded for four goals as the second half began. Talandracas
countered with a pair of goals, but fell behind, 7-6.
Talandracas wasted little time in bouncing back as they outscored HB Polo 3-1 in the
fifth chukker. HB Polo was now trailing, 9-8.
Talandracas continued to control the ball in the final chukker of play, adding two more
goals to their total. HB Polo managed a single goal in the period in the 11-9 loss.
Cartier Queens Cup competition moves into the second round of play on Saturday
with a noon match at Coworth Park between Enigma (Charlie Hanbury, Sapo Caset,
Guillermo Wittington and Jerome Wirth) and El Remanso (Ali Patterson, George
Hanbury, Pelon Stirling and Guillermo Terrera). El Remanso will try to win their second
consecutive goal while Enigma (0-1) will be looking to even its record.
The second match of the day will be played simultaneously at the Guards Polo Club
where Twelve Oaks (Magoo Laprida, Inaki Laprida, Marcos Di Paola and Stefano
Marsaglia) will face EFG Bank Aravali (Karan Thapar, Mark Tomlinson, Javier Novillo
Astrada and Jaime Huidobro) with both teams looking for their first win of the season.
The 3pm contest will showcase Adolfo Cambiaso and the Dubai polo team (Rashid
Albwardy, Alec White, Nico Pieres and Adolfo Cambiaso) against Emlor (Spencer
McCarthy, Joachim Pittaluga, Luke Tomlinson and Nacho Gonzalez). Dubai lost their
opening match to El Remanso in the final minute of play while Emlor rang up a 12-10
win over Enigma.
